Car theft rules Humphreys out of Ulster Rally

Posted on Wednesday, 27 August 2008 04:04PM by Robert Fagg
Aberdyfi rally driver Wyn Humphreys and Manxman Rob Fagg’s Tesco 99 Octane MSA British Rally Championship bid may be over after their Subaru Impreza N12 rally car was stolen in the build-up to last weekend’s Todds Leap Ulster International Rally.

The car, inside a trailer container, was taken in the early hours of Friday, at 4.20am, from the Cohannon Auto Lodge, Dungannon, where the team were staying.

The crew were woken up shortly afterwards to be given the shocking news that the PGA Motorsport-run Subaru, part of the Atlas TEG Sport British Championship team was gone.

In the hours that followed, police attempted to trace the whereabouts of the £50,000 car, but had no success.

The car had been in a trailer attached to one of the team's service vans in the hotel car park.

Rob explained: “The trailer was locked on to the tow hitch of the van. They got that off somehow and connected it to their van and have gone off, all in the space of a minute.”

“A couple were sleeping in a car nearby and were woken up by the noise and saw what happened,” related Wyn. “They raised the alarm and the police were on the scene very quickly. There is even CCTV footage of the theft, but it’s all been to no avail so far.”

The footage did show that a blue Citroen Berlingo van was used in the theft, but another blow to the team came at lunch-time on Friday when it too was revealed to have been stolen and it was found burnt out in a field near the border with Ireland.
The car has the registration number T15 TEG and the trailer was a Brain James RS3 Trailer. Also lost were both of Wyn’s rally suits and crash helmets.

For now all the team can do is to appeal to the performance car and rallying community that should you hear anything that may help in the recovery of the car, or are offered any Subaru Impreza N12 parts at a price which may seem a little too good to be true, then please get in touch with Wyn on mobile 07967 318 504

Looking forward, the team would like to thank the very many people in the sport who have offered assistance in the past few days.

Although the theft is a huge blow, there remains a slim hope of hiring a suitable car for the remaining rounds of the championship, Trackrod Rally Yorkshire and Wales RallyGB (Britain’s round of the World Rally Championship), depending on raising the required additional funding.
