The rally school will give the everyday driver the chance to turn their hand to hand brake turns, controlled power slides & other typical rally driving techniques, all in the controlled enviroment of our authentic rally venue. The school cars are new as well - authentic, competition prepared Peugeot 106 Rallyes. They have all the features of a class winning car so you’ll be able to throw them around and do maneuvers in them that you previously thought were impossible.

GwynneSPEED is one of the only rally schools in the country where the competition element of the day consists of timed laps rather than individual assesment. The clock never lies! The winner receives a trophy but at the end of the day, we’re all there to have a good time and learn something new whilst having great fun..!

All the GwynneSPEED instructors hold competition licences and therefore have stacks of experience to teach you how to control the car whilst going sideways on a marble-like surface.

Rally School - Course Details

Upon arrival, we furnish you with tea & coffee and introduce to our team of expert rally staff. All of the GwynneSPEED staff have had experience in either National or International rallying and so should you have any questions about any aspect of rallying, please don’t hesitate to ask.

After a thorough briefing where all the safety points are covered and a very brief introduction into some of the techniques your instructor will be teaching you, it’s straight into the driving seat of the rally car. Your co-driver/instructor will guide you around the loose gravel stage at a slow pace to begin with to show you the areas of the stage where you will need to be aware of where the car is going to understeer, oversteer, slide or loose traction. The next time you come across these corners, you will be traveling a lot more quickly so make sure that you listen to what your co-driver is telling you.

The next few laps are at a far more intense pace. Your co-driver will be encouraging you to get the car sliding about and they will be showing you how to correct understeer & oversteer, how to use the handbrake and throttle to control the car as well as how to make the most of the brake, turn, power technique to enable you to take even the most demanding corners at the fastest possible speed. They will also start using basic pace notes such as:

ER< 40 ! C 30 HpL 150 Jnc 9R>

Don’t panic – this may seem totally foreign to you at the moment but by the end of the rally experience it will make perfect sense!

You will then come into the paddock area and change over drivers. This will give you a chance to reflect on the totally new driving techniques that you have just experienced. It was also give you a chance to watch other people and notice the mistakes they are making or possibly how well they are tackling the gravel stage.

The next time you get in the car, you will have the opportunity to put your newly found skills into practice but without being under the pressure of the stop watch – that is still to come! Your instructor will be pushing you to brake later, work harder to make the car slide around the corners in anticipation for your timed competition laps in the next session. By this point in the course, you will have memorised a lot of the stage and so you are nearly ready for the competitive laps!

You will come into the paddock area once again and swap drivers. This is a really good point in the course to ask any questions that may have developed over the duration of your driving time.

Now’s the session you’ve been waiting for – your chance to try & beat the clock. You will have one last practice lap and then it’s up to the start line:

"5..4..3..2..1..Go Go Go!!"
The clock is ticking as you try to remember where the braking point is for this 90 degree tightening corner – remember to keep it all tidy and accurate as your instructor is also assessing your technical ability.

Your timed laps are over – have you done enough? Did you use the power slide correctly on that flowing corner; was your use of the handbrake good enough? Don’t worry – you’ll find all that out at the end of the course!!

The next time you get in the car, you’ll be in the passenger seat – this is the part where the instructor takes you on a White Knuckle Passenger Ride (and yes, you will have white knuckles by the end of the ride!) Your instructor will show you exactly how to flick the car into corners and brake so late that you cannot imagine that there is any way that you will make the corner – all part of being a professional rally driver.

At the end of the course, you will be de-briefed and the times will be compared and the winner declared. You will be presented with a certificate to give you a constant reminder of your Rally Experience Day!
