Road Rallying

Road rallies are run on public roads which are not closed to other traffic.  The events are normally run overnight when the roads are at their quietest. The length of the rally route varies but on average is around 160 miles.  The route of the rally is not known by the crews prior to the start of the event.  The Navigator is given a set of “instructions” from which he is able to plot the route on the map.  This can consist of a variety of formats, either tulips, spot heights, grid references, grid lines, compass directions etc., or a mixture.  Each “section” is timed to the second and penalties are given for arriving early or late at a control.  The Navigator has to work out the average speed the driver needs to travel at between each control to arrive at a specific time.  Each control has to be visited in a strict order and be approached from the right direction.  This type of event relies heavily upon the skills of the Navigator.

Standard road cars can be used provided they are road legal.  Additional safety items can be added.  These details can be found under the relevant sections of the “blue book”.  Race suits and helmets are not worn.

Entry Fees: Will vary from event to event but are approximately £60.
