19 year old Welshpool based rally driver James Watkins enjoyed a successful outing at the Trawsfynydd Motorsport Centre when he drove his Geoff Jones Motorsport run Nissan Micra to fourth in class on last weekends Clwydian Cars Stage Rally.
Watkins, who was co-driven once more by fellow Welshpool resident Geoff Mayes, was using the event as a test session as the F1000 Championship will visit the venue later in the year. And it proved an important test as Watkins experimented with different suspension settings on his Makefast of Newtown and Rally Marketing of Welshpool backed Micra. By the end of the day Watkins and Mayes had improved on their earlier runs by nearly 3 seconds a mile and were setting times comparable to the bigger 1400cc cars in their class!
What a brilliant day out. Many thanks once again to Geoff Jones Motorsport for helping us fine tune the setup of the little Micra! By the end of the day we were a lot quicker than in the beginning and so I think we are ready for the next visit now! We had one or two interesting moments early on but by the end I had a lot of confidence in the little car!
James is contesting the F1000 Tarmac Championship and after two rounds is placed ninth overall in this highly competitive series. The next round clashes with the Mid Wales Stages, an event which James will contest in his Nissan Micra but Watkins will rejoin the series on 4 July when the crews visit the Trawsfynydd Motorsport Complex for round four.
